Description

This full unit contains a variety of activities for studying "The Tell-Tale Heart" by Edgar Allan Poe, "The Monkey's Paw" by W. W. Jacobs, and "The Landlady" by Roald Dahl.

The unit could be great for Halloween, but you could teach it any time of the year. It contains everything you need to have your students analyze three creepy and haunting short stories from great classic authors, including the following:

* A FULL-TEXT version of "The Tell-Tale Heart" as well as...
- A four-page vocabulary analysis worksheet
- A vocabulary quiz with answer sheet
- A reading quiz with answer sheet
- "Insanity Plea" - An activity in which students analyze the sanity of the killer in the story and write evidence-based arguments (this is a full mini-unit in itself--see the full description in my listing of other products)
- A persuasive essay assignment along with a complete grading rubric

* A FULL-TEXT version of "The Monkey's Paw" as well as...
- A two-page graphic organizer for analyzing mood
- A three-page vocabulary analysis worksheet
- A vocabulary quiz with answer sheet
- A reading quiz with answer sheet
- A narrative essay assignment in which the students write an extended ending to the story (Roald Dahl ended it just before the climax) along with a complete grading rubric

* "The Landlady"
- A two-page reading log that students can fill out as they read--the assignment focuses on identifying examples of foreshadowing, making predictions, and analyzing similes.
- A three-page vocabulary analysis worksheet
- A vocabulary quiz with answer sheet
- A reading quiz with answer sheet
- A narrative essay assignment in which the students write a prequel to the original story along with a complete grading rubric

* Two short grammar bellringer exercises that can be used as an anticipatory set to prep students for the unit

The unit files come in PDF format for easy printing, but I've also included the original Word and Excel files in case you want to make minor tweaks.
