Description
Have you ever felt that students just don't understand decimals and how to model them? This is a great lesson to use whether you are introducing or trying to maintain those mathematical skills in reading, modeling, and writing decimals. The teacher can start the lesson by modeling decimals to the tenths and the hundredths. The students will be asked to read the decimal, model the decimal by filling in the chart, and then writing the decimal in word form and as a fraction! Once the students have had a lot of guided practice.... set them free and let them explore practicing decimals with a classmate. Included with directions, handout and cards, the class can work with a partner trying to collect smiley faces. For the game, I have used the fraction cards as a class and picked one card. Showed the card to the class and then students competed with their partner to read, model, and write the decimal correctly to earn a smiley face. Or you could give each partnership a set of their own decimal cards to choose from. I have also included a blank form of decimal cards for you to fill in your own decimals. It is guaranteed that the students will begin to understand and love decimals after this lesson!
