Recorder Rubric for Grading, Scoring, Assessment, or Evaluation

Description
This grid rubric contains eight categories for students to be evaluated within: Confidence/Enthusiasm, Song Choice, Hand Position, Fingerings, Articulation, Fluency, Tone, and Independence. In each category, the student can receive a rating of Expert, Proficient, Apprentice, or Beginner. The achievement standards are specific and measurable, using language such as "...at least 50% of the time." The wording of each achievement is presented as "I can..." statements, so students feel a greater sense of ownership over their own learning.
This Word document contains two full-page, editable versions of the rubric. The first version is based on descriptive terms. The second version includes a numerical scoring system for grading and data purposes. The third page of the document contains teacher tips, directions for use, and ideas for extensions to get even more use out of the rubric. Finally, the fourth page includes two half-page images of the rubrics to help you save paper when printing.
Note: the categories of rhythm (or rhythmic accuracy) and legato/slurs are not included. Rhythmic accuracy is a distinctly different skill. Assessing rhythm at the same time as recorder playing can create undue stress for students and even cause a good player to get a poor evaluation. The skill of legato playing and slurs is introduced later in many recorder methods. This rubric prioritizes tonguing over legato playing because tonguing is an important skill for all wind players to develop. That being said, the download is a Word document and you do have permission to alter the file as necessary to meet the needs of your students.
