What is a Sound Wall?

A sound wall is a way to organize phonemes and spelling patterns for students to use as a reference when they are spelling and reading words.  Words are grouped by phonemes (or sounds) and NOT beginning letters. There are 44 phonemes in the English language. A sound wall organizes these phonemes in a way that allow students to make sense of spelling patterns that make different sounds.

What is the difference between a sound wall and a word wall?

Word walls tend to be organized alphabetically using the first letter of the word.  Sight words, or high frequency words are typically placed on a word wall based on the first letter of the word.  When adding words to a word wall, teachers use the printed version and teach the pronunciation of that word. As stated above, words on the sound wall are organized by their sounds or spelling pattern.  When adding words to a sound wall, teachers first teach the sounds (or phonemes), then add the printed words that use the sound.

Why should I use a sound wall?

A sound wall can help children learn their grapheme (print) to phoneme (sound) relationships by giving them a reference point.  Students are explicitly taught the phonemes and proper articulation.  Sound walls provide consistent review of the sounds, improving their spelling and decoding skills.  By using the skills learned from the sound wall, students learn both high-frequency words and decode unknown words within texts.

How can I use a sound wall?

A sound wall can be empty at the beginning of the year.  It will grow as you teach the sounds and spelling patterns.  You can use the ‘lock’ icon to cover sounds you haven’t covered yet.  Introduce one sound at a time.  Draw the students’ attention to what your mouth is doing as you say the sound.  Focus their attention on the letters and the articulation card on your sound wall.  Connect how the clipart picture uses the sound.  Add words to the blank card to also use the same sound. Be sure to demonstrate how the students can use the sound wall as a reference tool.
