What educators are saying

This was the perfect resource to use with students to discuss empathy for others and caring for others when they are going through situations. THANK YOU!
My students really responded to the empathy scenarios. They really opened up about how they would feel if that happened to them. So many students wanted to share for each scenario.

Description

Empathy is one of the most important social-emotional learning skills, and the empathy scenarios in this lesson are the perfect tool for practice. Students engage in cooperative learning to practice identifying feelings in others and figuring out how to show they care. The lesson is interactive and engaging and allows for movement. These empathy activities can be used with or without a story book such as Stand in My Shoes by Bob Sorenson.

This resource also includes a Google Slides (TM) version for having students respond digitally to the prompts.

All scenarios included are related to school or classmates - and you get to select which ones are the best fit for your students. This makes it more likely for them to actually apply this tricky skill of empathy at school after the lesson!

Lesson includes:

  • Written plan with ASCA behaviors/mindsets and CASEL competencies
  • Slideshow for teaching and modeling what empathy is (great for if you don't want to use a book with the lesson)
  • Discussion questions that partner with the book Stand in My Shoes, as well as an interactive visual aid for additional scaffolding
  • Materials for creating scenario folders that students will practice showing empathy with: 18 shoe photos, 9 lower level scenarios, and 13 upper level scenarios
  • Editable PPT slide to add your own scenario
  • 2 processing worksheet options

*I recommend having 5-10 file folders to use as part of this lesson. It's more fun with them but totally doable without!*
