Symmetry and Kaleidoscopes

Kaleidoscopes are a great way to implement STEM into the topics of light, reflection, and symmetry. I start this lesson by reviewing what symmetry means in respect to two types of symmetry: line/reflection and rotation/radial. I like to use examples with shapes and also examples from nature.Next, I review what it means if light reflects off of an object and we discuss that today we are going to use what we know about reflection of light and symmetry to make kaleidoscopes. Then, I discuss the steps of how to make a kaleidoscopes with students, walking them through the process of building using the “Make your own Kaleidoscope” slide. I have materials prepped ahead of time. On the next couple of slide I share what materials I provide students with and the prep involved. Finally, I ask students to make three circular designs: one that has rotational symmetry, one that has line symmetry, and one free choice. I offered mandala designs as an option for rotational design that students could color to make symmetrical.
