What educators are saying

Like everything you create, this is a fabulous resource! I cannot wait to integrate it into my orchestra unit. Thank you!
These were super helpful during my first year teaching music! My students referred to them often throughout the year. Thank you for providing such a high-quality resource!

Description

Resources included in the Instrument Families kit help students classify and categorize instruments into their families: strings, brass, woodwinds, and percussion. I've done my best to include vivid pictures of real instruments, familiar and odd examples (guitar, violin, and harp but also sitar and balalaika), video links, and short descriptions to introduce students to common members from each instrument family.

Teach students how to spot and classify any instrument they see by finding unique characteristics about the instrument! Each of the PDFs included in this kit encourage students to use their critical thinking skills to decide if an instrument belongs in a particularly family or not. You'll also find a variety of games that could be used for whole group instruction or centers, printable reference cards, worksheets, and more!

Be sure to check out the preview file for details about each of the resources included in this set!

This product includes:

*4 "How-To Identify the Family" PDFs for Woodwinds, Strings, Percussion, and Brass families. Each file includes clues and important characteristics to help students classify an instrument into one of the four families.

*4 "Meet the Instruments" PDFs for Woodwinds, Strings, Percussion, and Brass families. The PDF pages highlight common instruments from each family, give a little history, include real pictures of the instruments, and also feature links to YouTube videos where students can hear and see the instruments in use.

*The Instrument Family Identification Game features 20 different instruments and requires students to figure out which family the instrument belongs to. This would be easy to teach to a large group with pictures displayed through a digital projector but can also be printed and used in centers.

*The Instrument Family Identification Game (Percussion Edition) features 20 different percussion instruments and requires students to figure out which mini-family (scraper, shaker, wood, metal, membrane) the instrument belongs to. This would be easy to teach to a large group with pictures displayed through a digital projector but can also be printed and used in centers.

*Instrument "Concentration" cards which would be easy to print and cut out. Students flip over two at a time and work to match pairs of instruments! The student with the most pairs as the end of the game wins. 32 different instruments are highlight in this set and each card includes important identifying information about each instrument.

*Instrument ID cards for reference or use with other games in this bundle. Print out, laminate, and use in centers or small groups to help students identify important characteristics about instruments and their families. These are great to pair with the instrument identification game or other resources from this bundle.

*10 Color the Keyword Worksheets - Use these “color the keywords” worksheets with or without the aide of the instrument reference cards. Students color in any words that relate to the instrument on the worksheet. Great for the sub tub!

*20 Venn Diagrams which encourage students to find differences and similarities between different instruments. Some pages in this set ask students to compare/contrast two instruments from the same family (trombone vs. tuba) and some ask students to compare/contrast two instruments from different families (French horn vs. saxophone).
