Description

Come one, come all, to the fun and engaging culminating activity for the wonderful novel by Avi, The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle! As one of my childhood favorites, I was thrilled when I started teaching this novel years ago. I looked to see if I could find an exciting culminating activity for years and never found one I truly loved, so I decided to make an escape room.

This has been created to be either low or high teacher involvement, as I've seen some of my classes can handle more autonomy than others. You can obviously embellish this with treasure boxes, and ships and really go to town decorating, I've included a few posters with quotes from the book to help with that!

There are 4 activities, and I would highly recommend students have at least one copy of the novel to help them with the tasks, as they have to look at specific chapters to find the different names for parts of a ship and then unscramble the letters to find an important secondary character that is also a location. The other 3 activities are

-organizing Charlotte's mixed up diary pages to get the latitude and longitude coordinates for a location in the book

-putting together a puzzle to discover a word that changes the fate of the entire crew

- using a codex to decipher a final message

My students enjoyed this escape room so much. Here are some testimonials!

"I liked the coordinates activity because I got to use my geography knowledge." -Liam A.

"I liked having to figure out the word from the parts of a ship, and then putting the puzzle together."

-Evelyn S.
