How to use this Thesis Statement Lesson:

This thesis statement mini-lesson will guide students through examples of thesis statements and explore the formula of a proper thesis statement.

You can begin this lesson with the Thesis Statement Slideshow Lesson. This slideshow defines the thesis statement and provides guidelines for what should and should not be included in a proper thesis statement. It also explores examples of effective thesis statements and different sentence structures that can be used to enhance students’ essays. Students can use these structures as formulas and templates for their own writing.

You can then hand out the Thesis Statement Information Handout, which provides a detailed definition of a thesis statement.  This handout also differentiates between the proper and improper thesis statements using a comparative graphic organizer. Students can evaluate thesis statement examples using the space provided.  This activity prompts students to provide feedback for each thesis statement example by using the criteria provided in the handout.

To consolidate this thesis statement activity, a detailed answer key has been provided.

This thesis statement lesson also includes a thesis statement checklist, which is formatted to be printed as a two-sided document. Cut the document vertically to create a bookmark-style checklist for students to use as a personal anchor chart.  Check your printer settings and select the format that will work best for you.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Extremely satisfied

The formula that this lesson provides for thesis statements is very solid, and I believe it made a much greater mark than the administrator's respective lesson that we had. Thank you for writing this, and also for not requiring a large investment.

This resource was incredibly useful. My students are always complaining about lessons being "boring", so I always look for ways to make their lessons more engaging. This resource helped me achieve that goal.
