Transformation Art 1 - Quilt Activity/Class project (CCSS 8.G.A.2 and 8.G.A.3)
What educators are saying
Description
Translations, Reflections, and Rotations are used to create a beautiful 3-D quilt pattern that students can color using their creativity. No two students will color their design the same way. The purpose of this activity is for students to use the rules of how each transformation effects the coordinates of the pre image resulting in the post image. Reflections and Rotations are done about the Origin. I have included a Cheat sheet that you may give students to assist them and for studying the changes that are made in the coordinates as each movement is performed.
This would make a great class project if all the squares were taped together to make one giant quilt that could be used to decorate a bulletin board or the wall. Absolutely beautiful!
I would use this project after teaching all the transformations as a review, project to do at home during the unit, a math center, extra credit, and it would also be great for substitute work as it will take quite some time to complete.
CCSS.Math.Content.8.G.A.2
Understand that a two-dimensional figure is congruent to another if the second can be obtained from the first by a sequence of rotations, reflections, and translations; given two congruent figures, describe a sequence that exhibits the congruence between them.
CCSS.Math.Content.8.G.A.3
Describe the effect of dilations, translations, rotations, and reflections on two-dimensional figures using coordinates.
