Wants and Needs Sorting Game

Before Christmas, I like to teach a unit on Wants and Needs, and I always have my students complete this activity by sorting pictures of different things we need to live and things we don’t really need to live. Prior to the activity, we talk about wants and needs and why things are categorized as wants and as needs. I usually set this out as a science center activity, but it can also be used in the math center as a sorting game! I have included a color version and a black and white version, which can be easily printed and colored to look like the color version, as well as a recording sheet to hold your students accountable for their work. There are two sorting mats, one for wants and another for needs. There are also 24 pictures of different things for sorting practice (12 needs and 12 wants). I included many pictures so that students get extensive practice with recognizing which things we need and which are things we can want, but don’t need. The following pictures are included: food, bed, car, clothes, house, water, milk, money, soap, shampoo, dad, mom, candy, lollipop, cookies, ice cream, soda, iPad, ball, game, kite, necklace, ring, phone. The cards (only) can also be used with ESL students, so that they can learn to associate pictures with the correct word in English. I hope you and your students enjoy this sorting game!
