This Word of the Year project is a great way to encourage a growth mindset, while teaching students how to set and accomplish their goals. Start the new year or new term with this fun activity! - 100 Word of the Year Ideas: Share this list with students to help them select their focus word for the year
- Brainstorm Graphic Organizer: First, students use the graphic organizer and question prompts to set four goals for the year. Next, students select one word to inspire them to meet their goals.
- Action Plan Template: Before setting a plan to achieve each of their goals, students define their word of the year and explain why they chose that word. After that, students describe how their word will inspire them to reach each of their goals.
- Reflection Worksheet: The reflection worksheet can be completed at any point throughout the year. It gives students the opportunity to rate the progress of each of their goals, explain what they feel they have done well, and describe what they would like to improve.
- 6 Color & Design Templates: Six templates are provided for students to design their unique word of the year poster. Full-page and quarter-page templates are included in color and black/white.
- 2 Banner Templates: Two design templates are included for the Word of the Year pennant flags. Color and black/white options are included.

- Complete this project in January for students to visualize and set goals for the new year.
- Use this project as an ice breaker activity at the start of a new school year or new semester.
- Have students pick one word for a character or historical figure, then find text evidence or quotes to support their word choice.
This resource can be printed on paper or read online with laptops, Chromebooks, tablets, or any device that supports Google Slides. The included PDF includes access to links that will allow you to make your own copy of the resources for use in Google Classroom/Google Drive.
