This lesson integrates social studies, math, and language arts. Student work cooperatively to create a map of a fictional community. They must follow directions which lead them to buy geometric shapes and include certain community properties while keeping within a budget. Students love this activity because it allows them to make choices and work with others. Students will conclude the project by writing a narrative about where their new community is the setting of their story.

This math challenge requires students to design a new business district for a downtown city. As they add dimensions to their businesses, they must calculate the area of each business and stay under a specified budget. They then must write a letter to the mayor of their city defending their business plan! Note: This is specific for Hagerstown, MD, but please feel free to modify it for your town!
