Mendelian Genetics Unit: Lesson 7: Your Monster and Punnet Squares

Now that students know how to set up Punnet squares and predict future genotypes and phenotypes, have them do the same with their monsters! Students will pick a partner in class, and their two monsters will fall in love and have many monster babies! Students will select traits, and will create 10 punnets squares that will show the possible outcomes for four different babies. Finally, students will put together a packet with their adult monsters (illustrated with their genotypes and phenotypes

Mink Dissection

This is the presentation I created to help my students through each major step of a mink dissection. While the presentation came in handy, I also modeled each step for them, but tried not to show them TOO much as I went-- there's something great in the discovery being theirs. As they started opening each mink, I would call them back, show more pictures on the board, or model through mine a bit more, quizzing as I went. (The first day is the toughest as students have to find the trachea and e

Mendelian Genetics Unit: Lesson 6: Intro to Punnet Squares

Before students can continue their monster project, they need to learn how to organize information about alleles, and predict future offspring using Punnet squares! This lesson focuses on how to organize information without a Punnet square, and looks at the pros and cons of solving a different way, then shows the more streamlined Punnet squares with side by side comparisons so students can see the exact same information is in both. There are levels of practice problems ranging from simple (fil

Plants: Lesson 2: Transpiration & the Xylem

In this lesson, students will take the journey through a plant via the perspective of a water droplet (traveling with a mineral). By reading an adventure-like story and illustrating it, the teacher can easily check for understanding, then later, explain the science behind what is happening. By using a story instead of a boring text, students are more engaged and visualize processes much better. This then, can provide an excellent foundation for building vocab or understanding larger scientific

Mendelian Genetics Unit: Lesson 1: Inherited vs. Acquired Traits

This lesson (60-80 minutes) was created to introduce genetics to 6-8th graders by introducing the word "trait"-- students will identify traits (initially physical, but then medical and behavioral) in celebrities and themselves that are both "inherited" or "acquired" and discuss how traits are passed on, and which traits pass on genetically. Students will work individually and in groups, discuss traits, watch a short web cartoon from Learn.Genetics, make a foldable, read about traits, categoriz

Plants: Lesson 8: Pollination & Angiosperm Reproduction

Students explore pollination and angiosperm reproduction by looking at real flowers, playing online games, reading stories, drawing and more. As a brain break, students also have a run-around scavenger hunt to review previous plant information. This lesson may take 2-3 class periods, depending on how long your class periods are. I did this in 2 90 minute periods. That being said, there are additional relevant do-nows, hooks etc. included at the end so you can rearrange each day as you like.

In the first part of this culminating genetics project, students will randomly design and illustrate their own monsters. On the final illustration, students will label both genotypes and phenotypes of their monster. In the next two lessons, students will create punnet squares between their monster and a fellow classmate's monster to see what potential offspring would look like. For six years, students identified this project as one of their favorites of the year. Key words: genetics, Mende

Plants: Lesson 7: Experimental Design-- Writing Procedures

By this point, students should have the basics of their experiment underway-- their independent, control, and dependent variables. We will then focus on writing good procedures by trying to follow directions that clearly do not work! After a jigsaw activity, students will come up with the rationale for writing a good procedure, fix poorly written procedures, and come up with rules for writing good procedures. Finally, students (in teams of 2-3) will begin writing their own. If time, students w
