This is a two part lesson. The first part looks at the culture/traditions behind henna designs. Students then design their own henna design on their traced hand. Next, the students create a monochromatic background by outlining the hand in concentric lines, showing a value scale through tints, pure color, and shades.

Shading Forms ActiveInspire Flipchart
This is in the ActiveInspire Flipchart format and is meant to demonstrate to the students how to shade each of the five forms (cube, cone, cylinder, sphere and pyramid) in a general way. It breaks down how the light effects everything and discusses the difference between shading a form and not shading a form.

Scratch Art Flipchart
Growing up, I loved doing scratch art in art class. If you are not familiar with scratch art, it is where you use several different colors of crayons and color a sheet of paper with the colors. After all white space is covered, you then use a black crayon or pastel to color over all of the colors. Once everything is colored, you "scratch" a design into the black. When you scratch off the black, the colors on the bottom appear as the design.

Character design
This activinspire flipchart contains a selection of different faces, clothes, hats and props to help your students create a character. Mix and match the different features to create a different character every time. This includes memory games where the students have to match the character to the correct prop (Tennis player with tennis ball, etc). This has been classroom tested on grade 5 students. It is a great visual aid to help them create their own characters.
