I have taught everything from honors and Advanced Placement (AP) to co-taught and self-contained english in Virginia and Maryland.
I wanted very specific guided reading for my self-contained special ed classes and could not find what I wanted. So I made it instead. For first year teachers or anyone who has kids that are struggling with reading at the middle or high school level, the Bluford series from Townsend Press is a great combination of accessible reading level with mature enough content and story lines that the students will not write it off as "kid's stuff." (It is also a steal at $2 a book).

I thought for years I wanted to be a college professor, because I loved reading. However, once I got into higher education, I realized teaching and reading were secondary to research. So I switched gears and am now a very happy special education teacher.
