Teaching has been my passion since I was a child. When there weren't neighborhood children to play "school" with me, I made my dolls and stuffed animals come to school. I have worked with students of all ages including teaching shorthand (in the old days!) and word processing skills to adults. For 17 years I taught at a small K-8 school with a focus on math and science and an accelerated curriculum. At the end of the 2014/2015 school year, I gave up full-time classroom teaching in favor of working as an artist-in-residence writing and directing children's theatrical productions. I also do some substitute teaching.
I believe in having an active, exciting classroom with many different activities and field trips. I enjoy introducing a broad topic ( pioneers, Shakespeare, reputation, machines) and then following the interests of the students within that topic. Exploration, experimentation, and experience are vital. Critters were an important part of our classroom and students learned to care for them. We raised salmon and axolotls, started a worm bin, raised ducklings, and cared for a bearded dragon, corn snakes, and glofish. I strive to bring drama, art, and music to children. Every year we performed at least one musical as well as Shakespeare scenes or an abridged version of a Shakespeare play keeping the original Shakespearean language. I have high expectations for all students. I offer encouragement and support as students find their passions and learn that, despite our challenges, we all have strengths.
