With ten years of experience teaching Spanish in the U.S. Virgin Islands, I pride myself in making quality and classroom-tested resources with a bright Caribbean flair. I hold an International Master's in Teaching Spanish from the prestigious Pontifical University in Salamanca, Spain. In my first seven years teaching Spanish, I dedicated myself to instructing Middle and Upper School students. However, three years ago, I eagerly took on the challenge of revamping our Lower School Spanish program and teaching our younger students. With my extensive background in curriculum development, I have authored the Spanish Language and Cultures curriculum for our comprehensive program, which spans from first grade to AP Spanish.
In order to incorporate comprehensible input teaching and align with the ACTFL standards while emphasizing global citizenship, it is essential to design instructional approaches that foster meaningful language comprehension and cultural understanding. By providing students with authentic and engaging materials, such as videos, articles, and interactive activities, teachers can create immersive learning environments that promote language acquisition. These materials should reflect real-life situations and diverse perspectives from around the world, enabling students to develop their communication skills and intercultural competence. By addressing global issues, such as sustainability, human rights, and cultural diversity, educators can empower learners to become responsible global citizens who are equipped to engage with the world in a meaningful and empathetic manner. This approach not only supports the development of language proficiency but also cultivates an appreciation for different cultures and a sense of social responsibility, which are central to the ACTFL standards and the promotion of global citizenship.
