I have taught special education for 20 years in 3 states, and overseas. My experience covers K-12. I have experience teaching Mild, Moderate, Severe, and Profound Intellectual Disabilities, Specific Learning Disabilities, Medically Fragile, Autism, Resource, and Challenging Behaviors. My current area of focus is middle school Life Skills, with some resource room instruction when student numbers demand it. I am also a mom to a teen with Autism. I have learned more from watching him develop and grow than from any textbook.
Presume competence. The skills can be learned, I just have to learn how to teach it to THAT particular student. All kids learn differently. What works for one, may not work for another. I like to approach most instructional opportunities in a manner that is hands-on, practical, engaging, and relates to real-life. I have the most success when I bounce off a particular student's interest.
