Jenning A Prevatte, M.Ed. received her Masters in Special Education with an emphasis on Early Childhood from Arizona State University. Jenning is an Assoc. Professor for Teacher Education and is the Co-Director of Teaching & Learning Center at Red Rocks Community College in Colorado.

During the completion of her thesis studies on the effects of American Sign Language (ASL) on early literacy skills and brain development she engaged in action research and developed a meta-analysis on the positive impacts of using ASL with hearing children. In this meta-analysis she noted that using this strategy not only supports communication but also development of literacy skills, brain development, fine motor skills, adaptive skills, and social and emotional skills in children.

She has utilized American Sign Language with her students and children with special needs when she was a Kindergarten teacher, as well as with her own children. She is a national presenter for conferences such as, NEAYC, Head Start, and Early Head Start. They are also the authors of the book, Sign, Read, & Play; The School Readiness Collection. All resources are based on Action Research and have been used in her own classrooms successfully!

Our specialty is providing you American Sign Language (ASL) resources for your classroom. We have discovered that American Sign Language (ASL) is not just for pre-verbal children and children who are deaf or hard of hearing.

It is a wonderful strategy to support literacy in an elementary classroom. In our classes we utilize the vocabulary of ASL to help children learn to spell, expand their developing vocabulary, and strengthen their reading skills. *ASL supports their development in literacy and in math by using a kinesthetic approach to learning. *ASL is used as a memory aid to increase learning.
