As students move through life, they encounter doors and barriers to success and given the correct tools, they will be able to open these doors. I am passionate about providing students these tools and inspiring them to open the door to their own success. I hold a clear credential with the single subject authorizations of General Science, Biology, Earth/Planetary/Environmental Sciences and Chemistry. Through my tenure with The Charter School of San Diego, I have received highly qualified authorizations in Social Studies, Fine Arts and Practical Arts, Math and English. For my employment at The Charter School of San Diego, I am responsible for the individualized lesson development for 40-45 students simultaneously, bi-weekly workshop lesson planning, developing science lessons and laboratories for Verification Processes for Teachers in Special Settings (VPSS) on a monthly basis, as well as, co-teaching the Tier 1 science VPSS workshops. In addition, I created the “Science Saturday” community service program, in conjunction with the local libraries. This program, which has been extended for an additional 12 months and expanded to a second library location, involves our advanced science students teaching elementary and middle school students science projects at the local library on a monthly basis. This program has a regular following and actively attracts new students, due to the word-of-mouth promotions at the elementary and middle schools. Additional responsibilities include being on the marketing department, developing recruitment and retention strategies, as well as, writing monthly newspaper articles which are placed in community newspapers, newsletters for parents and the direct enrollment of new students. During the 2009-2010 school year I volunteered within LAUSD at Belvedere Middle School within their 7th Grade History and 8th Grade Physical Science classrooms. I was presented the opportunity to plan and execute over 150 hours of educational lesson within the physical science and social science classrooms. Within the first two weeks in the physical science classroom, the 5th and 6th periods were exploring mass, volume and density. Throughout those two weeks I implemented a rewards system for the students and their grades increased 50% over their historical average. This trend continued for the remainder of my time within this classroom. Additionally, I developed a project that coupled the Protestant Reformation with bullying and had the 7th graders develop “Anti-Bullying” posters for their “Bully Reformation”. The students had the opportunity to hang their posters in the counseling office to help initiate a school-wide anti-bully campaign. The immediate in-classroom result was that the students starting using anti-bully words and developed a safer learning environment. I completed my student teaching at Ramona High School, within the Ramona Unified School District in the subjects of Biology and Human Anatomy/Physiology. I was responsible for lesson development and handling the daily responsibilities within the classroom. Additionally, I have a background as an Algebra, Geometry and Calculus tutor when I attended CSU Chico and assisted with in-classroom education for our career fair. I also worked closely with other campus organizations and the Butte County school districts to organize student attendance for the Fun without Alcohol Fair. This fair was designed for children in grades K-8 to prevent early adolescent drinking through education and alternatives. It is my goal to combine my range of experience with my ability to be a compassionate, enthusiastic, intelligent teacher who will make a positive contribution to the future of tomorrow.
As a teacher, I do not believe in a one-size fits all approach for student learning. Every student enters the classroom with their own set of beliefs, friends, learning preferences and personal problems. Instead, I believe in developing an individualized approach to lesson planning and content development by integrating a wide range of modalities and the personal interests of my class. The track for success is not only built on unique and fun lesson plans, but also, hands-on exploration and project completion. Student success in not simply measured in test scores, completed homework and projects, but how well the students are prepared for their future success. My unique educational methodology is the whole child approach that attempts to ensure that their success goes beyond the classroom and into their future endeavors. Students will have a strong knowledge of study skills, interpersonal relationships and presentation skills, along with the subject content when they exit my classroom. The track for success is built on knowledge and providing students with a preliminary tool kit of social skills, study suggestions and problem solving abilities.
