How Big Is It?: Measuring Large Objects with a Tape Measure

This simple chart challenges the young student to choose 5 objects in the classroom (a table, a chair, a friend, etc.) and measure the height and width of the objects. Leave the activity open ended and allow the students to choose their items to measure, or create your own list of choices. Two versions of the chart provide different levels of support for reading and using the data chart. Just add a tape measure! Great as a Math Center or as an introductory Science Lab.

Density Film Canister Lesson for Science

When students get done with measurement or science process labs, teachers are challenged to find activities to “keep them engaged.” Use this editable Google Drive activity to help them learn and practice standards based lab skills. The film canister challenge requires students to modify the density of a canister till it floats with neutral buoyancy. This mini lab can be set up for the whole class, or materials can be set aside as a “if time” activity. Video review for volume and mass measurem

Emily Yerington
This is a basic template for a "Scientific Journal" where students aged 3-6 can track the growth of a plant (my experiment was done using lima beans, but I am sure many other plants would apply as well. The children tracked the growth each day and finally bound their pages using a 3 hole puncher and yarn to make their very own book at the completion of the experiment. They were thrilled to see their finished products in the form of a "real book." I have included a sample I used for my pre-writer

Soil Science: Water Drainage Rate and Presentation

An interactive lesson for students to conduct research, observation, and inferences. Students will better understand how sand, silt, and clay affect the rate of water drainage from soil, and the importance of soil drainage. They should be able to relate soil texture to soil drainage after research, and identify which soil is best. Students will work collaboratively together to research and create a Google Slide presentation to convey experiment results.

Growing Food From Scraps in Primary School

Want to introduce young learners to growing their own food from what would normally be considered "waste"? Then this simple science experiment is for you! In this lesson, your students will learn how to regrow a vegetable from a scrap, monitor its vertical growth and discuss the ecological importance of reducing food waste. In order to make learning more accessible to all learners, both teacher and student versions have been written in both English and Spanish!
