Students write the daily I can statement, chose what they are going to work on, and have space to record what they've read or answer a question the teacher has assigned: the possibilities are endless. I've had students use the blank space for all kinds of things like writing down unfamiliar words, drawing a picture the visualized while reading, making a prediction, etc.
