According to author John Hattie, author of Visible Learning, self-assessment is one of the most powerful motivators for students. My APUSH students are required to keep their notebook organized with all in-class activities and outside reading notes/learning guides. On assessment days they self-assess their notebook and complete a reflection piece. Encouraging meta-cognitive skills in this way will help students experience more success as they think about what is working, what isn't working, a
