44 Phonemes (sounds) Cheat Sheet - 2 Levels: with Graphemes and Examples
- PDF
What educators are saying
Description
44 (+1) phonemes and over 180 graphemes, 2 levels.
Color and black and white versions also included.
Teaching spelling can be very tricky for our developing readers and spellers.
There are 26 letters in the alphabet, however there are 44 phonemes, and many more graphemes (written phoneme).
Using the 44 phonemes to map out letter combinations (graphemes) is a much easier way to understand that phonemes can be represented in different ways for example;
/b/ can be represented as b as in ball; and bb, as in rabbit. Another example; /v/ can be represented as v as in vet; ve as in glove; f as in of; and ph as in Stephen. As children develop the knowledge of the different phonemes and their graphemes both reading and spelling becomes much easier.
In order for students to become competent readers and spellers, they must have a developing understanding of phonemes, and how to hear, identify and manipulate them, and the letter combinations which represent them. This resource aims to give teachers the prompts to help plan out spelling programs for both K-2, and grades 3-6 with the two levels provided.
What’s included?
Please note; I have included 45 phonemes as I have separated the voiced and unvoiced /th/ sound, as they are two different sounds. I have found teaching them as such is easier for students to recall.
