Following Directions Penguin File Folder Activity
What educators are saying
Description
Finding following directions activities that children find fun can be challenging. Children enjoy dressing the penguin in winter clothes while slowly working in increasing complex directions. Dress-Up Penguin is great for one-on-one therapy but can also be used in small groups.
POTENTIAL GOALS:
- follow one-step directions
- follow two-step directions
- follow first/then directions
- follow before/after directions
- understand color concepts
- understand size concepts
The following directions cards slowly increase from simple one-step directions to complex before and after two-step directions. The cards come in two formats - paper cards and digital cards. This can make it easier for you to prep and plan for the activity. The penguin is not digital. Having children pull off the different clothes can help with hand strength which can help with fine motor skills.
CONTENTS:
- Penguin
- Four different boots
- Four different hats
- Four different bows
- Visual mat for helping with before and after directions.
- Paper and digital following directions cards (11 different levels)
TO PLAY: Lay out the file folder or folders (for small groups). Pick a level to play. As you move down the alphabet, the more complex the directions become. Read out the card. The child(ren) will place the appropriate clothing on the penguin. Pretending to be the penguin makes dressing the penguin more engaging.
As an extension, get out different winter clothes and have the children dress up using the different following direction cards.
