TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I taught ESL at a community college for 2 years. I loved working with the students, who were from all over the world. We enjoyed learning about each other's cultures. When I moved to Minnesota in 2008, I was hired by a high school to teach English. Every year, the students never cease to amaze me. They have so much heart in spite of (or maybe because of) all of the hardships they have faced in their short lives. We use reading and writing as a way of reflecting on life.

MY TEACHING STYLE

When planning lessons, I hold standards in one hand and the students in the other. I find what motivates and interests my particular students, and use that to help them achieve the standards. Class engagement is at the heart of my classroom. I feel I have a responsibility to engage and excite every student when it comes to learning. My personal motto is: Whenever I ask a question, I have to try to create an opportunity so that everyone can engage in thinking about and answering that question. I also make sure that whatever assignment I give them, they have enough support to feel successful at it - "I do, we do, you do." Modeling is key.
