I started teaching in 2013 and taught for 5 years before becoming a Math Instructional Coach where I continue to educate students and teachers K-5. Although I loved teaching 1st grade, my true sweet spot was upper elementary (specifically 4th grade). During my time as an educator I have worked in Title I schools as well as affluent areas serving a variety of learners including ELL, SPED, and Gifted/Talented. I believe in the power of differentiation and engaging math tasks that elicit a productive struggle.
I believe that a positive math environment needs to be in place before tackling the demanding math content standards. All students need to feel safe to make mistakes and that they are all capable of doing math. There is no such thing as a "math person". Multiple strategies/representations are my love language.
