Resistance to Reconstruction: Sharecropping, KKK, Jim Crow Laws

Created by
Engaging History
I found that students lacked a true understanding of the institutionalized racism and social/political/economic challenges African Americans faced in the 100 years between the end of slavery and the first breakthroughs of the Civil Rights Movement. To provide more context, I created this assignment explaining sharecropping, the KKK, Jim Crow Laws, Poll Taxes, Literacy Tests, and Grandfather Clauses. It is very informative and great for class discussion afterwards and linking to modern times.

"The Simpsons - Homer vs the 18th Amendment" Prohibition and Women's Suffrage

This is a simple and fun assignment I do to wrap up my Prohibition and Women's Suffrage chapter. It's a 22 minute episode. I have provided two different links in the title of the assignment. The sheet is prepared for half sheets. Obviously, I'd suggest previewing the episode ("Homer vs. the 18th Amendment") to make sure it's acceptable for your students.

The story follows the charismatic Southern governor Jack Stanton, played by John Travolta, as he runs for the Democratic Party's presidential nomination. A good friend of mine shared this thought with me a few years ago. How can we get our students to use and understand decimals? Help them to apply what they are learning to real - world situations. Since the Presidential Election is quickly approaching, I thought I would put this practice into action. In this activity, students will be given $1,000 in which they must use to pay for a three day - two night stay in Washington, DC in preparations for the Presidential Inauguration Activities.
