As a teacher who always tries to make learning fun and memorable I was caught off guard when given the challenge to teach the 8 parts of speech to 11 year old children. How can that be fun? March Madness Reading Tournament
This is a project that is great for the intermediate grades! Students select a book to enter into a class March Madness: Battle of the Books Tournament. They will create a persuasive poster and write a persuasive essay encouraging their classmates to vote for their book.
The books are put into brackets and voted on during multiple weeks. It starts with the "Sweet 16," "Elite 8," "Final 4," and then a winner is determined.

STAAR Surgeons
This is a great way to start working on STAAR passages with your students after the holidays. It is a very bright idea a coworker shared with me about four years ago to start implementing STAAR simulations in the classroom. I modified it a bit and gave it a name as well designed the thinking tracks that go along with it. It is a extremely engaging way to apply all knowledge previously taught in the classroom. Narrative Writing Passage - Students continue writing to the prompt
The narrative writing prompt sheet gives the student a scenario they read about. It gives the student a prompt to continue the story into writing their own narrative. This helps students exercise their narrative writing skills and is similar to what could be expected on end of the year state testing.
